"Every experience with the folks at Elm Point has been great. I feel my dog is very well taken of, and Dr. Lange has been wonderful. I highly suggest anyone wishing to have their pet looked at, to consider Elm Point."

"I have been going to Elm Point for years because of Dr. Lange and Dr. Little. The care they provide for my dog, Sadie, is truly exceptional. I was shocked on our first visit, as they allow an hour to examine each animal. Sadie had never received that sort of attention before! Dr. Lange and Dr. Little truly love animals and want to be thorough to ensure that every pet is healthy. I am so thankful to have found them!"

"The staff at Elm Point are great! I'm new to the area and had never boarded my dog and cat before. I wasn't sure where a good place to leave them for the week was while I was abroad. I found Elm Point and when I visited the facility I felt much better. It was clean and the whole staff was friendly! When I came back the next week Rattles and Dozer were still the happy animals I left them as. I had heard of bad experiences with boarding but Elm Point is amazing."

"The staff is very friendly and pets seem to really enjoy them. Dr. Little and Dr. Lange have both treated my pets this year, and I couldn't more pleased with either of them."

"Dr. Little has been the vet of record for my two dogs for almost 11 years and I recommend him to everyone I know with pets. He's thorough calm compassionate caring and will always spend the time to explain what's going on. He personally calls to check up on them after they've been in for some malady. I saw him at Busch Stadium and before I recognized him he'd asked me how the dogs were by name! He's the best vet I've ever gone to and as long as he's still working I'll be taking my pets to him."

"Dr Lange has been taking care of our 3 Welsh Terriers for the last 6 months. When we moved to Missouri from Texas we were really concerned about finding a "great" vet and Dr Lange is that vet. He does a thorough exam, explains everything, always personally calls when I leave a message for him about a problem. Dr Lange and everyone at Elm Point offer the best of vet care!"

"Dr. Little is the best Vet that I have ever had. I am so excited for his new location and cannot wait to take my dog Cleo there. He is a very friendly and passionate man that loves animals and gives them the best care possible. He not only spends a lot of time with his "patients" but also their "parents" and really explains things well. He always does an extensive check up and will PERSONALY call you with results, questions or concerns. You can call and leave him a message and he will call you back the same day. He has been a wonderful vet for the past 10 years and has been there through the good, the bad, and the ugly. He is a remarkable person and Doctor and I will continue to take my dog there. She always is well taken care of not only by the staff but all the Doctors. They always make getting meds easy, they will get you an appointment ASAP and they understand emergency and will work with you on getting you in. When you have to leave your animal overnight they are so caring and really make them feel comfortable. My dog had two surgeries in one year and the care and compassion she received was amazing. Even the "care" that I received was amazing! If you want the best care for your animals, the best service, and the best Doctor go see Dr. Little you will be glad you did!"

"Thank you for your kindness this morning when we arrived with our beloved chocolate lab, Hershey, who had passed away this morning after 10 years of being a member of our family.

"Each and every one of you are a class act, and individually and collectively, you showed such deep compassion and concern."

A Personal Story

"We called this morning and one of the office staff answered our questions and extended condolences.

When we arrived, all Kurt said in the lobby was "Hershey", and the front desk staff already knew why we were there, and two different staff members made us an immediate priority. Very quickly, Dr. Little greeted us.

Dr. Little suggested bringing Hershey in through the side door, and as I came around the exterior corner of the building, I melted. I want you to know how much it meant to me that your staff all were standing there with us, just outside the door, as if you were some sort of Honor Guard paying your respects to Hershey and to us. I just can't tell you how much that touched me. I don't know if you did that on purpose as part of your office protocol, but I have to tell you that it made a huge impression upon me. Later, I asked Kurt if he noticed it (he was distracted backing up the car with Hershey at the time), and when I told him what I saw, he was also very touched.

As we left, I knew in my heart that Hershey would be treated with the same tenderness and love you would have shown your own family friend, and it means so very much. Our children, Jason (age 18) and Taylor (age 16-1/2) were at school, and I knew that I could look them straight in the eye and tell them how tender you treated Hershey.

Dr. Little, I don't know how you picked Hershey up in your arms and carried her inside with a bear hug because she is a big dog, but your arms wrapped around Hershey, as if she was only coming for a checkup, was also a comforting sight. To your entire office, Hershey was not "remains" that needed to be disposed of. She was a loyal dog whom we cherished, and you all clearly demonstrated that you know that.

This is the first time in our life that we've been the parent, the adult, who shouldered the joy of bringing home a new puppy, and seeing that pet to it's last moments. It was a tough morning having two children looking at us as if they trusted that we knew what to do, when the fact is, we've never done this before, and we didn't want to do it wrong. We really relied on your office to provide us the information, guidance, and support so we were left with no regrets.

From Hershey's very first veterinarian visit back in 1999 to this one today, Dr. Little, I have been proud to call you her doctor, and your staff has always been a pleasure to work with in the 10 years we have known you. Every visit we have ever made to you for Hershey, or our other pets, you have always shown such overflowing love, attention to detail, and passion for what you do, from routine care to emergencies. Your patients are family pets, but to my family, you have treated more than just dogs and cats and other animals, you have simultaneously treated us. And all this said, these are just a small fraction of the reasons why Elm Point Animal Hospital is our pets' second family.

And to the Elm Point Animal Hospital Staff: Thank you for being great each and every time. I know Dr. Little (and Dr. Lange) accepts compliments and thanks humbly (and I have had many opportunities to give them to him over the years), and we all know that each of you does your part to make those compliments and thanks possible. Without you doing your best, it would be impossible for Dr. Little to do his best. And combined, you make a great TEAM delivering excellence to every person and pet who walks (or is lovingly carried) through your doors. There is no insignificant responsibility when you are part of the team that takes care of a family's cherished pets. So, thank you for being great." - Trice Family

A Case of Pyometritis

A 5 year old, female canine was brought in for an acute onset of lethargy, anorexia (not eating) and vaginal discharge. The owners had thought symptoms were related to allergies. The patient had never been bred and had a normal heat cycle 2 weeks prior. After a physical exam the doctor recommended blood work and radio graphs. He suspected pyometra- an infection in the uterus; in which bacteria have entered the uterus. The bacteria will migrate through the bloodstream and result in septicemia. It is a serious and life threatening condition that must be treated promptly and aggressively. It occurs at any age, but is most common in older dogs. Typical time for occurrence is 2-8 weeks after a "heat cycle". Clinical signs range from vaginal discharge (sometimes) to fever, lethargy, anorexia, and depression. Diagnosis is done with blood work- (elevation of white blood cells & globulins - a protein) and radiographs-(showing an enlarged uterus). An ultrasound can be done to differentiate pyometra from a normal pregnancy. After diagnosing pyometra we hospitalized the patient, placed an IV cath, began fluids, and IV medications. Pre-surgical and pain medications were administered, followed by an iv anesthetic, endotracheal tube placement and initiation of gas anesthesia. The abdomen is shaved, vacuumed, surgically scrubbed, and surgical rinsed. The patient was placed in the surgery suite on a heated surgical table. The surgery was performed using a Co2 laser. Co2 lasers are beneficial because they cauterize as they cut which causes little to no bleeding, and promotes faster healing time and minimal scarring.

The patient is monitored with state of the art equipment as well as a veterinary technician monitoring manually, to insure a patient’s vital organs function. Once inside the abdominal cavity the uterus was so enlarged and full of pus that it takes up most of the cavity pushing other organs out of the way. The uterus is removed surgically and carefully- (so that it is not ruptured). The surgery was routine with no complications. The patient was recovered by a technician and given additional pain medications to keep pain to a minimum. The uterus was weighed at 9 lbs an amazing size. Due to the severity and serious nature of this disease the patient remains hospitalized until no longer in a critical state. This is another perfect example of why it is so very important to spay or neuter your pet at a young age; preventing the chance of your pet developing such a serious disease .
